Embryo Transfer
We are now offering an Equine Embryo Transfer Service in addition to our already existing AI and Reproduction services. Embryo Transfer (ET) is the process of breeding a mare (Donor), collecting and transferring her embryos into another mare (Recipient) who then carries the pregnancy. The stallion and donor mare contribute their genetics to the foal and not the recipient. The advantages of ET over other methods of breeding are that is possible to obtain pregnancies from mares that are unable to carry their own foals, or from mares that need to remain in competition or racing (Standardbreds only) With this method it is also possible to obtain more than one pregnancy per year.
With recent advances in ET research and technology it is now possible to cool and transport equine embryos interstate within Australia and is already being done regularly on the mainland. The advantage of transporting cooled embryos is that it removes the need for the donor mare to be transported to a facility where ET can be performed. Currently there are no facilities in Tasmania with sufficient expertise or recipient mare herd to make this a viable service, and so owners are faced with transporting their mare to the mainland, often having to stay for weeks to months before they can return home again. We are excited to be teaming up with Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital in Victoria who will be responsible for the transfer of our embryos into their recipient mares. This is often seen as the hardest part of Embryo Transfer so we feel very lucky that our clients will have access to the expertise and scale of GV’s ET program who have 40 years experience in Equine ET and one of, if not the largest recipient mare herds in the country.
Given our proximity to Launceston Airport we can have embryos flushed from mares in the morning and be transported to Victoria and transferred into recipient mares that same day. For further information contact Jade Franklin on 0418919787.
